Mr. Pruett is beyond ecstatic to be the faculty sponsor of this fine student publication. However, despite his utter thrill, he has declined to comment on the topic of, well, himself, so there really isn’t anything we know about him that we can put in this bio. We’re sorry you took the time to read this, and, Pruett, if you’re reading this, tell us a fun fact we can put in this now blank space. Please. He also has four monitors.
If you ever want to find Afton, go to the gym and she will be climbing. When she’s not climbing or doing schoolwork, she’s listening to music, likely Adrianne Lenker or Elliott Smith. She loves reading (and Elif Batuman), playing guitar, and going to the New River Gorge to climb every long weekend we have. She’s looking forward to her senior year and is psyched to be a News and World News editor for The Commentator!
Since her Beyoncé concert, Shishira Nakka is a changed woman - her vision is magically better and her brain thinks a little bit faster. When she’s not reading a book or making Canva graphics, she loves to annoy her best friends with her really annoying personality and antics (their words, not mine. You can ask). Shishira, once called the MVP of SCA (remember the Canva graphics?), is a Peaky Blinder on the inside and the Centerspread Editor on the outside. She is so excited to be working on The Commentator with some of the greatest people she’s ever met.
When she isn’t blowing bubbles underwater, Ava Flournoy can be found browsing the aisles of Barnes and Noble, constantly looking for a new dystopian book. She loves to read, along with scuba diving, going to concerts, painting, and hanging out on the beach with family and friends. Ava spends most of her days keeping up with Harry Styles and listening to his new albums (of course, a special shoutout to all the other One Direction members). In her free time, Ava can be found binging Gilmore Girls. ‘Who cares if I’m pretty if I fail my finals?’ IYKYK! ;) Ava is thrilled to be the Graphics Editor for The Commentator team this year.
In her free time, Katie can be found reading, spending time at the Outer Banks, or binge watching Gilmore Girls (again). She is the proud captain of Freeman’s Quizbowl team. She is also a member of Freeman’s History and Human Rights club and Model UN. Katie enjoys talking about anything in the news, especially foreign affairs or politics. She also loves attending UVA basketball games (Go Hoos!) and spending time with her friends and family. Katie is thrilled to serve as Editor-in-Chief for The Commentator!
When she’s not scouring Pinterest for fashion inspiration, Poppy spends her time making jewelry, being a writing tutor at DSF, interning for the NWPC, and re-watching New Girl. A dog and cat lover, her camera roll is dominated by pictures of her pets that literally no one asked to see. She is thrilled to pursue her Y2K-Anne Hathaway-journalist delusions as Editor in Chief of The Commentator!
Meet Anna Meiller: a girl who has spent possibly triple the time her peers have on writing her bio. Other than spending far too long on schoolwork, she enjoys running and is on the Cross Country team and Track team at Freeman High School. Her favorite things in the world are (in no particular order) the sound of the coffee maker, her family, and being an ungodly amount of time early to every event in her life. She is ecstatic to be the Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Maverick Minute and looks forward to this year and all of its possibilities.
When Celia Acey isn't at school, you can most likely find her hanging out with friends, baking, or soaking up the last bit of sun before winter. An animal and nature lover, Celia loves spending time hiking, tanning (although she mostly ends up just burning), and swimming in the ocean. She also enjoys reading and binge watching the same tv shows over and over again! (She's probably watched Gossip Girl 10 times.) On the weekends you can find her yelling at the TV during Ohio State football games and procrastinating her homework until 9:00 on Sunday night. Celia loves writing about sports among other things, and can’t wait to be The Commentator’s Sports Editor!
Looking for Ella Post? Try her front yard or a football field, she is probably playing lacrosse. Committed to Longwood University to play at the D1 level, Ella is a determined student-athlete who loves to be active by practicing lacrosse, walking her two Australian shepherds, or weightlifting. She also enjoys expressing her artistic side through drawing, sewing, and baking. She goes a little overboard on buying everything Pumpkin Spice or Halloween-related during the fall seasons. Not only does she love fall, but she also loves coffee and ice cream. She has both at least once a day. When she is not busy running the Commentator’s online website, you can find her at dinner with friends (more specifically, El Caporal). She balances out her “basic girl with Starbucks” side by wearing creative outfits and listening to her favorite artists: Tyler the Creator, Omar Apollo, and Playboi Carti.
If she's not sprinting around the track, sweating profusely, you will find Ellie Grace hanging out with friends or walking her lab, Tilley. Otherwise, she's racing through the halls, chasing down an administrator for fundraiser approval. This, along with color-coding Google docs and drowning posters in glitter, are a few recurring duties in her job as Senior Class President. Outside of these activities, you can find Ellie Grace at the river, driving around blasting music, attempting to put off math homework until the last possible moment, and searching for chocolate-covered anything. She also loves reading and sneaking into the Ping-Pong Club on Tuesdays. Ellie Grace is super psyched to be the Opinions Editor for The Commentator this year.
When she’s not obsessing over her multitude of cats or complaining about how much she’s recently spent on books, you can find Lorelei Kelley hidden away reading her hundreds of books and petting all 5 of her cats (no, not all at once). Outside of school, she is often at gymnastics or attending a meeting for one of the many clubs she’s in. Lorelei enjoys drinking copious amounts of tea, listening to all kinds of music (except country), and taking as many pictures of the sky as possible. Lorelei is looking forward to being the Copy Editor for The Commentator this year.
When Lizzie’s not stressing over school work or overthinking, you can catch her spending time with family or adventuring with her friends. In her free time, Lizzie is probably playing volleyball, walking her dog, listening to music, or laying on the beach. She is obsessed with the summer and the sunny weather that comes with it, along with the exception to wear flip flops. Sushi is her absolute favorite food, and she is a hot sauce maniac. She’s obsessed with her small Shih Tzu poodle, Sophie, and if you call her “a white crusty dog”, she will be furious. She spends most of her money on concerts and doesn’t feel guilty about it. Lizzie is so excited to be the co-Online-Editor-in-chief for The Commentator!
If Merrick isn’t at cross country/track practice, then she is probably at a meet. You can catch her at Friday night football games chugging water and stressing about getting up at 6 a.m. to run around a bunch of fields. Besides participating in and enjoying a sport that all other athletes see as punishment, she also enjoys shopping (unless she has to spend her own money), watching Gossip Girl, and eating Chipotle (one of the only things she will spend her own money on). Merrick has two dogs, Janie and Gus, and one cat, Winter. Merrick’s favorite song albums include any, and all Taylor Swift albums (who she has seen in concert three times) and the entire Hamilton soundtrack. She also loves to read, and her favorite book is “This is Our Story”. She is looking forward to being the News/World News Editor for The Commentator!

Meet Maggie Jacoby, the features section editor for The Commentator! In her moments of free time, which are rare, she enjoys playing lacrosse, field hockey, and hanging out with her friends. While these activities keep her occupied after a long day at school, she loves coming home and scrolling on tiktok for hours, even when she has ten assignments due the next day. Other things that she loves include long car rides, her wolf dog Willow, and listening to country music. The rest of Maggie’s time is either spent at Chipotle, watching her family's sporting events, or in her bed sleeping
If you are looking for Hannah, good luck. Constantly running from place to place, with her many different commitments, she is never at one location for very long. If you are looking for Hannah, good luck. Constantly running from place to place, with her many different commitments, she is never at one location for very long. Every season is soccer season, of course, whether it be for Strikers, extra training, or Freeman, she is always active. She also has a year round internship with the National Women’s Political Caucus, is a Mavs United mentor, SODA student, an Editor and Chief for the Maverick Minute, and takes 5 APs. In the very minimal free time she has, Hannah enjoys spending time with friends, watching whatever random Netflix show she finds, and eating frozen grapes.
When he isn't cooking up a new never-to-be-finished programming project, you can either find Matthew running or playing golf. A real math lover, he will go out of his way to learn something that he hasn't yet been taught, especially linear algebra. He is also a member of Freeman's quizbowl team, specializing in science and religion. Matthew also competitively solves various twisty puzzles, like the Rubik's cube (it's way less weird than it sounds). He is excited to be one of the new staff writers for The Commentator this year.
From driving to Florida for field hockey to diving around a spikeball net in the front yard, Sarah is always doing something. She’s competitive without fail and never backs down from a challenge. If she’s not on the field, she can be found in the gym, out and about, or hunkered down in her room cranking out work. If she had free time, she would like to work on her sewing, building, or other artistic endeavors. Sarah is thrilled to be a staff writer for The Commentator this year!
When Libby Mercer’s head isn't stuck in a book, she can be found taking notes with her extensive highlighter collection, hanging out with her friends or in the kitchen having an impromptu Taylor Swift dance party with her mom. Libby’s ideal day starts with a pumpkin spice latte (she adores everything about fall) and ends with watching a cheesy rom-com on Netflix. Libby is thrilled to be joining The Commentator as a staff writer this year!
If you happen to see an overly excited high school student shopping at Trader Joes, you have probably spotted Kristen. In her moments of free time outside of school and volleyball, Kristen loves to hang out with friends, listen to music, and shop. You might also find her rewatching her favorite shows, Gossip Girl and Gilmore Girls. While Kristen likes to keep busy, she also knows how to spend a concerning amount of time sleeping or scrolling through Tik Tok when she should probably be doing something else. Kristen is so excited to be a staff member for The Commentator!
When Cate is not in class, you can almost guarantee she is knocked out in her bed for what ends up being hours at a time, trying (and failing) to make a dent in a new book series, or begging someone to come pick her up because she still doesn’t have her license. Currently, Cate has been busy signing herself up for everything she can get her hands on and then being upset about her lack of free time. Regardless of what Cate is doing, she always manages to have at least one airpod in. Honorable mentions go to Hozier, Noah Kahan, Childish Gambino, Zach Bryan, and 21 Savage. Don’t give her aux unless you're ready for it all. Regardless of a lack of free time or sanity, Cate is so excited to be a part of The Commentator this year!
Meet Maya Tluchak! When she isn’t drowning in school work, she is afloat in the ocean. Maya loves to go to the beach any chance she gets. She loves to surf, play soccer, listen to music, and of course, hang out with her friends. When she can’t be at the beach you can find her barricading at all concerts within a 300 mile radius. Maya spends a lot of her time stressed about the commitments she puts on herself, but she gets through it with an iced latte at her side. Although Maya has had four concussions she is still able to write skillfully which makes her a great addition to the staff at The Commentator. Maya is extremely dedicated to her academics and is very excited to join the staff as a junior!
Connor is just like your average guy. If you don't catch him jogging at the local 5k, you'll find him slumped on some sort of soft surface, or eating a mound of rice. He enjoys doodling on the assignments, instead of actually doing it. You’ll wonder why he gets so mad about procrastinating, when the answer is right in front of his face. He knows it’s there; He just doesn't want to admit it. He is looking forward to being a staff writer on The Commentator!
If there’s one way to describe Liah, it’s that she loves love. She loves seeing people laugh and dream. Her favorite movies and books (such as To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, One Day, Spiderman: Across the Spider Verse, Trolls, Catch-22, and the Outsiders) are some of the most romantic, heart-breaking, saddest, and powerful things. Her favorite animals are cats. She plays word hunt obsessively. At school, she is involved in MUN, MLL peer tutoring, the Asian Student Alliance <3, and NHD. Outside of school, she enjoys painting, making birthday cards for her friends, and watching musicals.
Meet Sadie! If you were to try and find her somewhere, check Starbucks first and then go to the pool and you will most likely find her. You can catch Sadie blasting Taylor Swift in her headphones or singing along to any country song. When Sadie is not stressing about all of the schoolwork that she decided to start at 10:00 pm on a school day, she is watching Gilmore Girls on repeat. Sadie is very excited to be a staff writer for The Commentator this year.
Do you ever feel like there’s never enough time in the day? If yes, then you are a lot like Scotty Gregory. If Scotty finds any rare free time, then you would most likely find Scotty reading, playing soccer, or with her friends. She spends way too much time doing schoolwork or overthinking to do those things though. Her favorite things in the world are Tybee Island, naps, and playing with her dogs. If you need some help with your math homework, don’t come looking for Scotty. She is probably upset about hers for the 9th time today. Scotty is the girl who has no idea what she wants to do with her life. She has gone through so many different ideas that you couldn’t even count. So maybe steer clear of asking her about those, but come talk to her about pretty much anything else! (Besides math.) Scotty is thrilled to be joining The Commentator this year!
If you wake up before the birds sing you may find Katelyn Morrow at the NOVA pool, completing her first swim practice of the day. When she isn’t volunteering or going to club meetings, she is driving around blasting music with her friends. Katelyn loves baking, reading, working out, hiking and swimming (obviously!) When she isn’t waiting for high school swim season to start (when she gets overly spirited), she loves going to football and baseball games to cheer on the MAVS. In her free time she enjoys traveling to Montana and California to see her family. Katelyn is so ecstatic to be a Staff writer for The Commentator!
If you don't see Julia Connor at the pool, it means summer is officially over. Her favorite season is summer(obviously), but when that's over you can find her at school, doing homework, taking naps, or shopping. After school she loves to drive home with Taylor Swift playing, hopefully she doesn't have swim practice afterschool. She loves weekends filled with “Gossip Girl, hanging out with friends, and no schoolwork. She is excited to write for The Commentator this year!
When Izzy isn’t at the field for field hockey practice, you can find her attempting to finish her mountain of schoolwork or listening to music. She loves everything and anything Taylor Swift/Zac Bryan. She also enjoys taking a good cat nap, reading books with pretty covers, and watching cheesy rom-coms. Some of her personal favorites inc

She loves everything and anything Taylor Swift/Zac Bryan. She also enjoys taking a good cat nap, reading books with pretty covers, and watching cheesy rom-coms.
